Few of us imagine that our work at school, and even the connections we make there, could one day see us saving a part of the planet. But this is exactly what has happened to Charlotte Hopley, co-founder of Grassroots Tanzania. Teaming up with our very own Clare Thompson Managing director of ICD UK, Grassroots Tanzania has become a beacon for conservation projects across Africa and in the most recent edition of the prestigious public school magazine, ‘Belvedere Chronicles’, this wonderful story is told…

In 2013 Charlotte Hopley and her husband, Martin, founded Grassroots Tanzania, a small conservation and education organisation working in remote rural Tanzania, East Africa. Miles from any infrastructure (running water, roads, and electricity) on the edge of a game reserve, Grassroots Tanzania is protecting over 100 acres of land, producing their own honey as part of their sustainable business model and building a primary school for the children of Itumba Hill Singida nearby.

This is off the grid. this is where development doesn’t reach. this is where many villagers haven’t ever attended any formal education. this is where ther are no services. No tarmac for miles. No raods other than dirt tracks. No electricity other than for those who have the capacity to install solar. No running water. No water pumps. And that’s just the infrastructure. Not to mention the other development needs, health, education and environment. The list is endless…
